The biggest cleanup job we ever had to was to restore an old house to living condition. It sat on a lot that went back about three generations. After the last family member lived in it, it sat empty for four years. The lot that was already overgrown with bamboo and kudzoo vines, then began to over grow even more. The problem is that in the southeast Texas region, vines can quickly grow rampant and over take everything in sight if they are left to their own devices therefore vines like wild grapes and wisteria also began to infiltrate the property. All of the vegetation began to overtake the house as well, causing it to begin to rot. Because of this, most of the living room floor, one whole wall of the living room, and half of the roof had to be replaced. Not to mention, the possessions on the inside of the house that had began to decompose and had been rifled through by trespassers all had to be thrown away. The job was so massive that a giant hole had to be dug in the middle of the yard just to burn away most of the things drug out of the house. I've worked in oil tank removal since then, but I'll never forget this cleanup. It was a task I hope to never have to undertake again. |

Home is where the heart is, right? Well, at least that's what I've been hearing. But, unfortunately, I haven't necessarily felt that way in a while, to say the least. I'm a victim of society, of the economy, of unemployment. Worst of all, I am a victim of boredom. And in the countless hours that I sit staring at the empty, bland walls in my new apartment, I think about all that I would do to this place if I was given the tools. I certainly have the time. I would start by painting my bedroom a pale shade of blue, something like seafoam - this colou would go well with my velcro fastened curtains. I have heard that the color blue causes the body to produce calming chemicals. Who knows if there is truth to that? Then I would finish with an exotic saltwater fish aquarium. The living room is next, with a splash of green to lighten the mood and promote relaxation. I would love to add a few plants to the not-yet-existent coffee table to inspire and cleanse the senses. The bathroom would receive a pale yellow makeover, because white is just too plain. Dandilions and daffodils would overwhelm the senses with a sweet musky odor, a small reminder that spring is on its way. You see, the things that matter to me aren't a big flat screen TV, or a three hundred dollar coffee maker, or a vacuum that does the job for me. Heck, I don't even HAVE a television at the moment. But it is these dreams that motivate us to achieve what we want, regardless of what that is. As for me? All I want is to be comfortable in my own home. |
